Painpit Rampage

KC Kendall Was Over At Painpit Rampage This Is How It Went

Painpit RampageArriving slightly late after seeing the local one-way system, quite a few times (fuckin sat-nav) all staff seemed to be in position and ready for action. Door staff looking very professional, meet and greeters happy and friendly, and runners – well running around like mad men!

I arrived showing my love for my Wiltshire team, sporting my Dragonslair T-Shirt.  But don’t worry ladies, I had a back up catsuit in my bag of goodies!  I was met by Colin Mould, given a purple wrist-band and I was promptly shown to my cage side table – and when I say cage side, it was up against the wires of the cage!  A fight card, pen and 2 bottles of water awaited me on my table. Perfect hosts, welcoming, efficient and very friendly!

As I knew where I would be seated for the evening, it was time to go and see who I could find! And as luck would have it, in the first room I walked into I see the Dragonslair team.  After a quick catch up and a few ‘pleasantries’ exchanged, they were called in for fighters rules. Which was my cue to go and make myself look stunning.

Time for a trip to the ladies! And men, if you want to know what goes on behind that door – here’s the secret.  Out of the t-shirt, into the catsuit, make-up check. Perfect!! Good to go!

So 2 minutes 30 seconds later, I was making my way back to the main arena, which is when I met Richard ‘Shakey’ Shore. I had another very warm welcome as he escorted me back to my table, where I settled in for what already felt was going to be a fantastic night.  The crowds were slowly making their way into the main hall, there were laughs and sounds of long lost friends meeting up – or maybe even for the first time ever!  Before the action started, I met various members of the PainPit Team including -

The Ring girls – Sally Louise Morris and Ali Drew

MC – Ricky Wright

Referee – Mark Woodard

Photographer – Huw Fairclough (Short & Round)

As the arena filled with crowds, and everybody took their positions, the atmosphere was electric. PainPit is the biggest MMA show that Wales has to offer, and up there with the best UK MMA events. It’s known for its high calibre fighters, and fair matchmaking - which makes for the most exciting fights. Each show seems to improve on the previous show, and there are high expectations.  Most of the crowd know this, and are filled with excitement and anticipation. But there’s a new face to the scene – in fact new to the MMA scene, and she’s definitely picked the best show as her introduction into the world of MMA. Rachel Bowes – owner of the Welsh boxing magazine ‘Bocsio’ and personal friend, was the last person to come and say hello before the fights started, she seemed full of intrigue and anticipation. She told me there were a couple of boxes of the 2nd Edition of Bocsio left at the entrance – so I hope you all picked up your free copies!!  Then the first fight was announced …

I’d like to add a personal note to the end of this section. There is a lot to say for a whole Team by how their fighters conduct themselves.  There are a number of teams who had 1 or more fighters who were boo’d by the crowd (as some members of crowds who have no idea of the training these athletes put in behind the scenes for months before their fights) sometimes tend to do.  I would like to congratulate all fighters who this happened to on their composure and their continued professional respect they continued to show their opponents. One fighter in particular who this happened to, stood out for me.

He trains at Brotherhood MMA, who may have lost all their fights, but they conducted themselves with complete respect and professionalism. Their Polish fighter Tom Cukier was boo’d non stop during his walk-out, entrance into the cage and introduction, and he still showed his respect when he clapped for his opponent. This not only reflects well on the fighter and their club, but also for all (respectful) fighters in this sport. This is just an observation, as reflecting on the notes and footage I took during the night at PainPit, every time the crowd boo’d I noted the true professionalism of both fighters involved. It helps the image of MMA in general when fighters can react to a very large crowd with such respect and dignity.  It was also great to see every fighter showing respect to their opponents after their bouts – win or lose.  The standard of fighter professionalism was very high at PainPit.

ROUND 1

Both fighters come out quickly and trade jabs, Peacock follows with a low leg kick. They spend a few seconds weighing each other up as Peacock takes center cage.  They exchange more low kicks until Peacock catches Al-Faifi’s leg and moves forward with a punch. Al-Faifi’s back is against the cage momentarily until Peacock jumps into guard, and Al-Faifi falls to the ground into full guard. Peacock keeps a tight guard while Al-Faifi tries to posture up and attempts to stack up.  Peacock sees an arm and attempts an armbar, but Al-Faifi quickly returns to full guard in top position.  A couple of minutes are spent fighting for position, with Al-Faifi throwing body shots, and Peacock keeping tight and attempting different submissions.  The ref stands the fighters up. Both fighters exchange kicks and punches, taking it in turns to move forward. Into a clinch and Peacock lands a few nice knee’s, Al-Faifi does well to escape and they square off again.  The last 10 seconds sees Al-Faifi push forwards, he gets Peacocks back against the cage, shoots for a double leg takedown and gets the slam just before the bell.

ROUND 2

Both Fighters come out a little more cautious, punches and kicks are exchanged both sides until Peacock jumps into guard and pulls Al-Faifi to the ground.  Al-Faifi is in full guard and Peacock keeps it tight. Another struggle ensues for position, but there are not as many body punches thrown this round – the fighters are tiring. Al-Faifi manages to posture up and Peacock attempts a triangle – the crowd are shouting for their fighters as they see a possible finish in sight! Al-Faifi does very well to push through and get back to position. Al-Faifi’s corner telling him to keep his head high whilst he drops a few more punches, and Peacock continuing to look for submissions.  The ref stands the fighters up, just as the clapper indicates last 10 seconds.  The round ends with Peacock throwing a good punch followed by a blinding knee, and Al-Faifi immediately shooting and getting a single leg takedown slamming Peacock down just as the round ends!! The crowd are going wild.

WINNER HASSAN AL-FAIFI. MAJORITY DECISION.

ROUND 1

Both fighters come out quick, meeting in the center of the cage, they spend a few seconds weighing each other up. Nelson starts the action with a low kick following through into a clinch. A struggle ensues for control in the clinch with various leg kicks and attempted sweeps, but Nelson ultimately gets Theo’s back against the cage. Theo attempts a few times to reverse position, and succeeds after a few attempts – but Nelson is quick to take advantage of Theo's head position, and goes for the standing guillotine. As Theo struggles to free his head, Nelson lands a knee to Theo's mid section, drops his weight then jumps into guard … Theo is in a standing guillotine whilst in Nelsons guard for what seems like forever! The crowd are going mad, shouting for their fighters. The ref is watching very closely as Theo defends the guillotine whilst trying to maintain standing position – as his corner shout instructions telling him to stay in that position and let his opponent hold his own body weight up.  This works, Nelson tires and drops his legs back down to standing position, but maintains a guillotine hold. Theo maintains wrist control, shoots in and gets a double leg take down! The crowd go wild!! Theo lands in top position, Nelson continues to try for the guillotine as Theo passes guard. Keeping Theo in tight, Nelson works his guard up and attempts a triangle, but Theo postures up and pushes through. Theo is in full guard and spends the last 10 secs of the round posturing up trying to pass guard, with Nelson defending well.

ROUND 2

Theo comes out hands high and throws the first strike, a low kick. It goes unanswered as both fighters continue to weigh each other up. A few seconds later Theo shoots forward with a knee which lands on the midsection of Nelson, and a clinch ensues. After another few knees, Theo quickly attacks Nelsons hips and sweeps him to the ground, briefly gaining side control.  But Nelson manages to make space and get a knee through, quickly gaining position and attempting an armbar from his back! Theo does well listening to his corner, and is keeping his weight stacked on Nelson, but Nelson rolls to his back and manages to stretch himself out briefly looking like he could finish! But Theo steps around Nelson, stacks up again and ratchets his elbow free. It was a nice escape and Theo takes control. The round ends with Theo dropping punches to the ribs and a knees to Nelsons shoulders.

ROUND 1

Hashim starts the action with punches, and Scott answers with kicks. Hashim shoots and there is a struggle which sees Hashim end up on his back. But Hashim continues to work hard from the bottom and continues to attempt more submissions. He catches Scott's arm and attempts an armbar, he tries to sink it in but just cant secure the elbow, instead he goes for the triangle. The fighters roll as Scott tries to defend, but Hashim rolls on top, and applies a triangle from mount. Scott does well to escape, but Hashim takes his back and attempts a rear naked choke! But Scott is not making this easy for Hashim and he’s very high on Scott's back. Scott escapes the RNC and is continuing to showcase his defensive skills! Hashim stays tight to Scott's  back, and sinks his hooks in. The round ends by Hashim throwing punches down, before attempting another RNC.

Scott has Hashim in side control when Hashim attempts a triangle, which forces Scott back to full guard.  Hashim fights for the triangle, but transitions to an armbar. These fighters are showing a great level of submissions and escapes which is keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats! The round ends with Hashim trying for the triangle throwing body shots.

ROUND 3

Scott comes out meaning business and doesn’t touch gloves. There is an exchange of punches, and Scott looks tired as he looks to keep the fight standing. Hashim shoots for a take down and gets it! Scott's back is against the cage and he uses this to stand. Hashim takes him down again, and yet again Scott uses the cage to stand. Hashim takes Scott down for a third time!! But this time he makes sure he takes full mount and starts firing down punches. Scott is doing his best to keep tight, but Hashim uses his forearm over Scott's throat and continues to drop bombs! The noise from the crowd is amazing! Hashim’s corner keeps shouting for him to go for the armbar, and he responds by moving into a high mounted position whilst continuing to drop heavy punches.  Scott is showing great defense as he tries to buck Hashim off, but Hashim uses that forearm across Scott's throat again, and with the clapper signalling the last 10 seconds both men unleash a flurry of punches.  Even as both men stand on instantly show their respect for each other, the crowd are still cheering more than ever.  This was a real crowd pleasing fight.

However, Tilllery combat is known for its outstanding ground game, and although Williams is making his debut, this could make for an exciting clash of styles.

ROUND 1

Williams shoots and takes Westover down, but Westover lands with his back against the cage and uses it to stand. Williams throws a few knees and Westovers back is against the cage, but he pushes his way forward where there is a big exchange of heavy punches and kicks center cage. Westover catches Williams with a huge body shot which drops Williams to the ground. Westover follows through with big bombs!! The crowd are voicing their disapproval but Williams does well to cover up. The ref gives Williams a chance to fight back, but he just couldn’t answer after that body shot. Both fighters are showing what they are made of as this action back and forth continues until the ref separates them, and they meet back in the center of the cage. Figlak is first to throw a big right hand but Maybury gets a take down! Not for long though as both fighters quickly make it back to their feet. Figlak pushes forward and the fight ends with Maybury's back against the cage, both men fighting for control.

ROUND 2

Maybury comes out of his corner more cautious, and there is no glove touch. Both fighters exchange a flurry of kicks and punches and Maybury a massive high kick! He then shoots in for the double leg take down and gets it - but both fighters stand straight back up. Figlak ends up with his back against Maybury, and a scrabble for position follows. Maybury lands another takedown and Figlak lands with his back against the cage, which he uses to stand the fight back up. Both fighters are stood up, wrestling for control but its still Figlak whos against the cage.  ANOTHER take down by Maybury as the crowd roars!! This time Maybury takes top position and quickly transitions to north/south. Figlak does really well not only to defend but also to stand back up. Now Figlak gets a takedown! He continues following his corners instruction as he keeps dropping punches "body, body, head .." Figlak is keeping busy and Maybury is defending well, keeping as tight as he can whilst trying to work his guard up for a triangle or armbar attempt. Then Maybury momentarily gets his hooks under Figlaks legs, and lifts him off the ground, but it wasn't to be and positions returns to how its been for most of the round. In the last 10 seconds Maybury shows his grit and determination STILL trying to use the cage to stand, as the round ends with Figlak continuing to throw his body body head combination which has works so well. Both fighters still look fresh as they come out and touch gloves. The fight stays center cage where both fighters exchange big punches and kicks. Morgan pushes forwards and Marcinkowski's back ends up against the cage. Morgan tries for a double leg takedown, but doesn't get it, and the fight moves back towards center cage. Morgans punches are looking tight and controlled - and most are landing! Whilst Marcinkowski is throwing big knock out punches, not landing many - but it would be a fight stopper if they did! Marcinkowski takes a big left hand! How is he still standing?! But he maintains his position in center of the cage. Both men are still focused and very much in the fight, both still throwing with everything they have. Marcinkowski pushes forwards and Morgan ends up against the cage. But not for long as he switches position and takes control. Marcinkowski switches back! Great defense from both fighters! Very well matched, and the closing seconds sees Morgan throwing knees from against the cage.

ROUND 1

Both fighters touch gloves, and Dalby starts the action with a front kick. This is answered by Grant with his own front kick, which Dalby catches whilst throwing a counter punch. Dalby follows through and works for the first takedown, but nearly gets caught with a guillotine. Grant is working off his back, and now attempts a triangle, but Dalby does really well to defend, and both fighters scramble back to their feet. Grant shoots in and SLAMS Dalby! The crowd are going WILD! There's a struggle for top position which sees both fighters stand up again. Its very evident even at this early stage that these 2 fighters are very equal, and have come to put on a show!! The fight goes back to the ground and there is another struggle for top position - both fighters attempting and escaping various various subs. Dalby eventually gaining top position, but Grant has him in guard and attempts an armbar. He sinks it in - the crowd are now chanting "ARMBAR ARMBAR!" Dalby is patient and keeps his calm, maintaining his defence.  The final 10 seconds sees Dalby gaining control, whilst Grant is using his back against the cage trying to stand the fight back up.

ROUND 2

Both fighters come out breathing slightly heavy, they have both worked really hard so far. Fake shots are thrown from both sides, both a bit more cautious. Dalby lands a take down, but gets his neck caught between Grants legs. Ian works from this position and attempts various leg submissions, which forces Grant to retreat, and the fighters stand back up. Now Grant lands a takedown, and it looks like Dalby has been hurt! Grant quickly takes Dalbys back dropping punches from the top. Now he takes full mount! It’s a very dangerous situation for Dalby, but he does really well not only to recover to scramble and gain control! Grant has Dalby in full guard and Dalby is stacking all of his weight up on top of Grant. Grant attempts a triangle, and there are punches thrown from both fighters. Grant tries to roll up over his own shoulders to escape, and Dalby keeps his weight stacked down on him as the final 10 seconds are called. Another scramble ensues as both fighters end the round fighting for control.

ROUND 3

There is no glove touch as both fighters meet center cage and exchange big punches and kicks. How are these fighters still looking so fresh?! Grant is throwing most kicks, including a high spinning roundhouse, and Dalby is throwing most of the punches. Dalby then shoots and takes top position, but Grant shows good defense and shrimps whilst trying to keep Dalbys hips away. Dalby is made to work hard to maintain control, and when he starts to stack, Grant does well to keep Dalby in tight.  The ref stands both fighters. The crowd are showing their support for both fighters - this is so close, it could go either way! The fighters go toe to toe again until Grant shoots taking Dalby down landing on the ground with his back against the cage. The last 10 seconds are called and Grant is keeping busy stacking his weight on top of Dalby, keeping him pinned against the cage. From my angle I cant see the fighters hands over the closing seconds, but I would assume there is a struggle for a submission attempt as there are no punches thrown from either fighter. The round ends with Grant in top position and Dalby against the cage. Both fighters stand up smiling and show their mutual respect. The crowd are extremely loud as they show their support. This was a crowd-pleaser and a very close fight which showcased both fighters grappling skills.

Amos throws a jumping spinning heel kick - which misses. Whiticker lands a huge punch! Its already clear that both these fighters have solid jaws! I cant see this ending in a knock out! Both fighters continue to exchange punches and kicks, until Amos takes a low blow. The ref calls time and Whiticker is given a warning as Amos is given time to recover. There are chants from the crowd who want the fight to continue. Amos doesn't take too long and the fight continues, Amos leads with a few kicks, which are answered by punches from Whiticker. There are some very impressive kicks from both fighters, and the crowd are becoming increasingly louder! There seems to be a huge amount of support for both fighters, and they're not afraid to show it. Whiticker spends most time in the center of the cage and continues throwing BOMBS, mainly in the form of overhand rights. Amos is picking his shots and is very accurate with his punches. Amos throws another spinning backfist! This fighter really wants a KO! The last 10 seconds are called and Amos is pushing forward, he throws a high kick to the face, and it lands!

ROUND 3

With the crowd still going crazy for the action they've already seen, both fighters come out and are still looking fresh as they touch gloves! These guys really are athletes! They are both still light on their feet as Whiticker throws a huge overhand right. It lands, and they continue with the toe to toe non stop action. Amos ends up against the cage, and Whiticker is going for the first takedown of the fight. He eventually gets the takedown and Amos lands on his side, back against the cage. He uses the cage to work his way back up to standing, switches position and takes control. Amos is landing knees to Whitickers legs. Amos's corner is shouting for the takedown, but Whiticker defends well. Amos goes for the ankle grip but Whiticker takes wrist control and fights for position. Now both fighters are against the cage! 10 seconds left and both fighters are showing great cage defense. In the closing seconds Amos gets a takedown. The fight ends with Amos dropping punches on Whiticker, who is on his side, back against the cage. This fight has been a war and the noise level from the crowd reflects that! Williams stacks his weight up and sprawls on Evans, making further elbows difficult. He composes himself and lifts Evans up and slams him to the ground! There's blood on Evans, but it looks like its from Williams. If the slam hurt Evans at all, he does not show it, as he maintains the triangle. Williams is getting visibly weaker and this only encourages Evans to throw more elbows. Williams refuses to tap, but is no longer defending and the ref stops the fight.

Williams tries to stand but is only able to get to his knees. He is too weak and his upper body falls back to the floor. This man is a warrior!! Paramedics attend to him quickly, and as Williams slowly recovers from the choke he shows his respect to his opponent.

ROUND 1

Both fighters come out and touch gloves and the fight begins with both being very cautious. Marshall takes center cage but it is Cukier who shoots and gets the takedown. Both fighters scramble to their feet but Marshall leaves his back open, and as they stand Cukier is quick to take his back and the crowd go crazy as Marshall gets SUPLEXED! Cukier continues his attack with devastating knees as Marshall is pinned against the cage defending himself. Marshall shows his fantastic defensive skills and gets back to his feet, but Cukier shoots again! Marshall sprawls and gets top position, but Cukier works for the double leg take down AND GETS IT! But Marshall has him in guard. THE WHOLE CROWD ARE GOING CRAZY with chants of "MARSHALL! MARSHALL! …" This must be a huge encouragement for him as he attempts a triangle, but is unsuccessful. Marshall tries to stand but Cukier takes his legs again and slams Marshall to the ground. For a reason still unknown to myself, something I must have missed from the angle I was at, the ref stops the fight and deducts a point from Cukier. When the fight restarts there is an exchange of punches before Cukier shoots for the takedown. Marshall is quick to sprawl and defends well whilst taking a number of body shots. There is another scramble and both fighters stand back up. There is another exchange of huge punches from both fighters, Marshall's gum shield flies out as Cukier shoots in, but misses the takedown. The ref puts Marshall's gum shield back in. Both fighters continue to throw wild knock out punches as the crowd are roaring more than ever! Then Marshall throws a huge knee which hits Cukier in the face. His blood splatters all over Marshall's face! This is a complete turn around!! It looks like Marshall has found his momentum with the help of his fans, and he pushes forwards with a flurry of furious blows landing every one of them! Cukier is now up against the cage in defense mode. Both fighters are becoming visibly tired, but Cukier is in survival mode. He's been hurt! Marshall smells blood and continues dropping knees, the last of which drops Cukier to the ground. Marshall continues his brutal attack with big punches to his downed opponent. The brave Cukier is still showing heart and determination by trying to stand, but Marshall drops him again, and the ref stops the fight. The crowd are on their feet! Marshall took a beating and ended up turning the tables to finish the fight. Both men show their respect for each other as the crowd continue to chant for Marshall.

ROUND 1

Both fighters come out and touch gloves. Allan opens up the action with a high kick, which is answered by a low kick from Parry. Allan catches the kick and follows through with punches and a rush to the cage. Parry is backed up against the cage as Allan throws and lands a number of knees. There's a struggle for control as Parry returns a couple of knees, Parry gets a whizzer and does well to defend Allan's knees. There's a long struggle for under hooks and wrist control. Allan attempts a single leg takedown, which he eventually gets. Parry rolls with the take down and Allan lands face up on top. Parry has control of Allan's arms looking for shoulder control as he keeps him in tight, but Allan breaks free and there is scramble for position. Allan ends up in top position but Parry has him in half guard and is trying for shoulder control, which Allen is defending well. Parry is keeping Allan in tight as Allan tries to posture up, but he eventually passes guard and transitions into side control. A few punches are thrown as Allan tries to maintain side control, but Parry spins his hips, takes Allan's back momentarily before transitioning into full mount. Allan drops an elbow from mount and Parry uses a hip thrust to throw Allan up just enough to make space to turn. During the scramble that ensues Allan takes control and gets back to side mount. Parry is trying to get half guard whilst Allan remains tight and starts dropping punches and elbows.  Parry spends the last 10 seconds of the fight trying to get half guard whilst Allan keeps applying the pressure.

ROUND 2

Both fighters come out looking fresh as Parry starts the exchange with a knee, then there are a few punches thrown and  both fighters exchange kicks. Allan throws a high kick which Parry times beautifully with a low kick to Allan's supporting leg, as a result Allan drops to the ground. He rapidly finds his feet but Parry charges forwards and pins Allan against the cage. Parry works for a double leg take down, but Allan successfully defends it and drops a couple of elbows and punches. Allan pushes his back off the cage and moves forwards, both fighters are in a clinch struggling for control. Parry throws a huge overhand right which lands and hurts Allan, who turns to avoid further damage. Parry quickly takes Allan's back and the fight goes to the ground. There's a scramble for position and this time Allan takes Parry's back and begins dropping punches from top position. Parry turns and is now on his back, Allan is in guard and turns to grab Parry's leg. Parry defends his leg and pulls Allan back up into guard. Allan sees the potential for a straight armbar and attacks, but Parry defends beautifully. Allan transitions to side control as Parry continues to try stand the fight up, but Parry sees the opportunity for a guillotine and takes it! In the closing seconds, Allan tries to escape the guillotine and there's another scramble which sees Allan take top position. As the round ends Parry maintains the guillotine from the bottom whilst Allan drops punches from the top.

ROUND 3

The closing round starts with a big punch from Parry, as Allan throws a counter punch and a low kick. Parry answers with a HUGE overhand right which lands and wobbles Allan!
